How To Trade Stock Options

Trading stock options can at first seem complicated, but once you take the time to understand the fundamentals it is actually fairly simple. Many investors prefer trading options over buying and selling stocks. The primary reason for this is it provides an investor with more choices and less risk. When you purchase a stock outright, it can go up or down. If the stock goes up you make money, and if it goes down you lose money. In the volatile world of finance, there is oftentimes no way to know in advance which way the tides will turn, regardless of what your experience level is.

When you choose to trade stock options, you have the option to buy or sell a stock within a specified amount of time as it is spelled out in the contract between the potential buyer and potential seller. Over that specific period of time, a transaction may or may not take place. Once the deadline is reached, the contract is over and neither party is required to do anything. It is important to be aware that in Europe the expiration date is the only date a transaction can take place, while in the United States the transaction can take place at any time during the contract.

If you are considering getting into trading options, there are some acronyms that you should be aware of. One of these acronyms is ATM, which stands for at-the-money. What this basically means is that the price stays close to its original rate. OTM is an acronym for out-of-the-money, and this is when the price is too far off the strike price for the investor to profit. ITM stands for in-the-money and allows the contract holder to make money. These are just a few things you should know about stock options. Although they are less risky than other types of trading, options do carry some risk. If you are looking for an investment that is risk-free, then doing anything with the stock market won't be for you.

If you would like to learn more about how to trade stock options, a good place to start would be to begin reading the Wall Street Journal on a regular basis. In addition, there are magazines that are dedicated to trading. And of course there are books as well that can teach you about trading options. A few recommended books include "Options for the Beginner and Beyond: Unlock the Opportunities and Minimize the Risks" by W. Edward Olmstead, "Understanding Options" by Michael Sincere and "The Rookie's Guide to Options: The Beginner's Handbook of Trading Equity Options" by Mark D. Wolfinger. Any of these books and publications will be of great benefit to you as you begin your adventure in trading options.
